about

“Biako Ye” – For the Akan people of Ghana this means “togetherness is good”, as for the Nguni people “Ubuntu” translates as “I am because we are”.

This track is part of a journey that started in January 2020 with my trip to Ghana, where I first encountered this concept, never knowing that it would find new form even during the isolation of lockdown which came almost immediately afterwards.

One of the flipsides of the uncertainty of this historical moment was that the normal pressures of the music industry fell away leaving room for a more genuine and untethered collaboration based on trust, friendship and cooperation without any expectation about what the result would yield.

This first release is an expression of profound connection, not just between the musicians involved, but also between the network of people who made it real through listening, feedback and encouragement. The journey of self-discovery that I underwent as a result of this process was only possible through that connection with other people and this how I found the spirit of Biako Ye was still affirming its power.

In celebration of my hopes I send this music out to the world. And as a gift to you, from Ghana to lockdown, and whatever is waiting for us in the future - Biako Ye.
